Theophan the Cretan seems to be the fist accomplished icon-painter to continue the tradition of old iconographers. His finished work whether in the Monastery of St Nickolas Anapausas in Meteora or in the Monastery of Stavronikita on Mount Athos, established him as the father and teacher for the future servants of church art.
